Eureka

EUREKA!  a Greek word meaning, “I have found it!” brings up images of the Gold Rush era, where Eureka played an important role in providing supplies to nearby prospectors.

The railway and Redwood highway connected this seaport to Crescent City to the north and San Francisco to the south in the early 1900’s, creating quite a boom -- making Eureka a desired local for trade, timber, fishing and tourism.

Sadly, the past is peppered in conflict with not only Native Americans but also the Chinese, who were banned from the city from 1882 to 1959.   However, it has overcome those marks and has embraced diversity.

Not only was it a hub of business and trade then, it still is today.  Although timber and fishing has taken a back seat to tourism, it is certainly doesn’t disappoint.  With it’s rich history, vibrant Victorian architecture, boardwalk and bay, Old Town district, Henderson Center Shopping district and the like, Eureka embodies it’s name:  I have found it!
