McKinleyville

Ever wonder how names are chosen for places?    A little digging and you’ll find that a small section of town was first named Minorville after the Minor Family.  Another area of town was Calville, an employee housing area for the California Barrel Company, and then there is Dow’s Prairie named after the Dow family ranch.  Take these three areas and voila! --  you have our cozy bedroom community of McKinleyville, named to honor William McKinley, our 25th President, after he was assassinated.

Although named the Arcata - Eureka Airport due to the population it serves, it is physically located in McKinleyville.  As this area has the most fog in the country, it was created as a testing location for pilots learning how to land in the pea soup.

It is a warm and inviting town.  There you’ll find Clam Beach, plenty of shopping and a myriad of restaurant choices.  You’ll also find people on horseback, family focused town events and plenty of activities to keep you busy at the community center and park.

There are no immediate plans to become a city proper, but maybe that’s just another part of it’s charm.  It has development and growth but still holds the bonds of community.
