"Keeping the Watch" 1865 - July of this year the Brother Jonathan, a coastal steamer, sank on St. George Reef. Over 150 lives were lost that day. Immediately plans were put in place for a lighthouse. 1882 - Construction began. 1892 - Construction completed and the lighthouse began service. After 10 years and $700,000, individually cut granite blocks were transported by steamer to the lighthouse located 6 miles off the coast near Crescent City. 1975 - Operation by the Coast Guard ended. 1993 - The Fresnel Lens was moved to the Del Norte County Historical Society Museum (6th and H Street). Lighthouse nominated to the National Register of Historic Places. The lighthouse is located 6 miles at sea near the California/Oregon border. It can be viewed from Crescent City, California to Brooking's, Oregon. The lighthouse was built on a rock 17 feet above sea level. It was considered to be one of the most dangerous lighhouse stations as 4 keepers have been killed while on duty. Today the St. George Reef Lighthouse Preservation Society is at work keeping the history alive. You can find out more about this lighthouse and the society at: http://www.stgeorgereeflighthouse.us
