Point Cabrillo Lighthouse Print E-mail

1873  -  Point Cabrillo surveyed by the US Lighthouse Service

1908  -  Construction began

1909  -  June 10, lens was illuminated for the first time during a midnight ceremony. Residents of Pine Grove and neighbors to the first keeper, Wilhelm Baumgartner, were in attendance.

1939  -  Coast Guard absorbed the US Lighthouse Service.

1963  -  Bill Owens, the last civilian lighthouse keeper at Point Cabrillo, retired.

1992  -  Conservancy took possession of lighthouse.

Pt. Cabrillo is a monitoring station for LORAN C (Long Range Aids to Navigation) an electronic system used by ships and aircraft to pinpoint their exact location and projected route. LORAN is being phased out in favor of GPS satellite transmission. The Loran equipment has been relocated to the oil house as part of the lighthouse restoration program.

Guided walks in the preserve are available every Sunday at 11am May through September. Meet at the Visitor Center in the parking area adjacent to Point Cabrillo Drive. The Lighthouse History and Frolic Shipwreck Exhibit is open every day from 11AM-4PM. The lightkeepers home and museum are open Saturdays and Sundays from 11AM-4PM. The farmhouse Visitors Center Pomo History Exhibit is open Thursday-Monday from 10AM-4PM. The Nature preserve is open daily from sunrise until 1/2 hour after sunset.

Just north of Mendocino, on Highway 1, turn onto Pt. Cabrillo Road at Russian Gulch and follow the signs. Only, 1.3 miles from Russian Gulch. The Light Station is approximately one half mile walk from the parking area. Handicapped access parking is available at the Light Station in front of the residences.
